How to Make Jello Shots: Jello Shots 101
November 26, 2007Jell-o has been around for more than 150 years thanks to Peter Cooper. His patent for gelatin powder has taken center stage in some of the most delicious desserts inspired by chefs and homemakers alike. Today that tradition continues with some added benefits. Alcohol!
There is a lot of speculation surrounding the birth of the “jello shooter”, but one theory states that it was a man named Tom Lehrer who first used gelatin to sneak vodka unto a national security base where alcohol was restricted.
In any case, the gelatin shot has seen a huge surge in popularity in the last decade, probably due to more in-house entertaining. That’s a good thing! So, there you have it, your mini history lesson on Jello Shots. Now it’s time to get to the good stuff and learn how to make jello shots!
Making jello shots is super easy and with a little creativity you can add that wow factor or should I say the Ohhhh in Jell-o! The basic recipe calls for any flavor jello, water and vodka. As a rule of thumb, the alcohol should make up 30% of the total volume of liquid.
However, don’t get stuck on these numbers, it’s only a guideline. Naturally, if the alcohol content is higher, you should use less and vice versa, unless of course this is a head banger of a party!
I would like to mention that jello shots are not limited to using jello. I prefer to use knox gelatin because it is clear and flavorless. A clean slate to create an variety of flavors. Often, jello is overpowering and that’s all you taste. Experiment with both and see which suits your palette.
You’ll also need some shot cups (duh!) You can use the standard 1 oz plastic cups and lids or for more entertainement value, you can try the
Suck and Blow Jello Shooter tubes, Mmmmm! this could prove to be a very interesting soirée.
Tip: The plastic cups don’t release the jello very easily, so unless you’re Gene Simmons I recommend the alternative.
So, gather your ingredients and let’s get our first drink on!
